Lagoon reef is near the southern end of Diani Beach. This hotel feels slightly more intimate than some of its larger neighbors. The beach hotel, situated on 20 acres, has spectacular grounds and an interesting pool. Near the beach is a huge 50-year-old baobab tree which attracts many monkeys. The free form pool, built like a lagoon, has an island with jungle vegetation. Tropical gardens cascade down the long slope towards the beach.

The lobby, with its high thatch roof is cool and exotic. There is the sound of water and interplay of light and shadow. Wooden bridges lead over the lily ponds, and there are bird songs from small aviary. The main dining room is at the same level as the lobby-the ocean and pool are a long way down a rather steep slope. This hill has been nicely landscaped and path meanders down towards the pool. Whistler is well-known as a great year-round destination. In the winter months it is one of the world’s great ski resorts, with over 8000 acres of groomed runs and an incomparable range of off-piste runs limited only by your skill and nerve. During the winter the accommodation of choice is generally going to be either a ski-in, ski-out townhome or an apartment in the Village or within walking distance of it. A very few (and highly sought-after) properties fulfill both these conditions, but most of the accommodation is in one or other category.

In the summer, however, the most desirable lodging may be elsewhere. Slopeside properties that offer ski-in, ski-out but are a good way up the mountain are fabulous during the winter but not so great in the summer except for the mountain biking fraternity for whom they may become ‘bike-in, bike-out’. As a result these condos which command a terrific premium during the winter are often available at very discounted rates in the summer. You may be able to pick up a 4-5 bedroom 2200 sq. ft townhome which commands $2000 a night at New Year for $4-500 per night. It will be beautifully furnished and have great views; the only drawback is that it is a bit of a hike up the hill if you are on foot.

As a parent, I always want to challenge my daughter to stretch and grow beyond what she thinks her limits might be. Competitive swimming is one vehicle that has and will continue to accomplish this goal.

I am not going to waste your time by listing all of the reasons why athletics in general and swimming in particular is beneficial for your child. I assume that if you are reading this that you have already resolved that and swimming is what you want to know more about. When our daughter was 8 years old, we thought it was time to begin to think about some sort of athletic activity.
